The Israeli Association for Behavioral-Cognitive Therapy (ITA)
The Israeli Association for Behavioral-Cognitive Therapy (ITA) was originally founded in the 1970s by a group of psychologists and social workers, who studied in the United States and brought with them new ideas. The organization was officially founded on February 4, 1980. The chairman of the first committee of ITA was Dov Friedlander. Other committee members who became influential in the development of CBT in Israel were Yoel Goldberg, Marilyn Sefer, Dalia Gilboa, Claire Rabin, Michael Marbaum, Michael Rosenbaum, Tony Shachar, Yohanan Wesner, Meir Rotem, and Tzafira Ashkenazi.
As of 2008, 250 active members have joined the ITA. These friends, most of whom are psychologists, Social workers and psychiatrists, specialized as required as certified therapists, who have studied CBT and apply the approach in their daily therapeutic work. They all met the requirements required to be a cognitive-behavioral therapist, based on a "minimum training standard," as detailed on the EABCT website. Many other professionals claim to support CBT, but do not pay ITA membership fees, or do not meet the minimum training criteria and therefore cannot be members of ITA. Most IT members see themselves as behavioral-cognitive therapists, as defined by EABCT. Most therapists apply Beck's intervention method or Ellis's REBCT. Recently, what became known as the "third wave" has also become popular and attracts many CBT therapists. Most of the work with adult patients in the areas of pain, anxiety, stress, grief, health problems and others is also applied among pediatric patients with problems of anxiety, OCD, aggression, learning disabilities, etc. Some of the therapists even specialized in couple and family therapy.
ITE organizes workshops, seminars and seminars. Although the organization is small, the organized activities are very successful and have a high presence of other therapists. A number of world-renowned guests have visited in the past or will be attending workshops, including: Donald Meichenbaum, Michael Mahoney, Fred Kanfer, Isaac Marks, Arthur Freeman, Ray Digiuseppe, Marsha Linehan, Judy Beck, Windy Dryden, Tom Borkovec, John Williams. ITA has its own website (www.itacbt.co.il), with rich and updated content and information in the CBT field in Israel and linked to CBT sites around the world. Many Israeli CBT therapists attend international congresses and present their work or give lectures.
